Improvised Stage Combat Workshop

Date and time: Saturday, 15 February 2025, 10:00 - 13:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshops

Stage combat is traditionally well rehearsed and choreographed, spending hours if not days on technique and action. In the world of improvised theatre, there are only split seconds and multiple minds working against that very essence of safety with combat. This workshop will take those techniques and create an overall language and skill foundation that can give you and your ensemble the ability to execute successful combat on stage while not executing each other. Starting with “hand to hand” style combat, we will focus on the theatricality and specificity of combat techniques in a fashion that can be repeated safely in the moment of an improvised scene. Depending on the location, tools available and skill of the participants; the advanced skills of sword/weapon based combat will also be covered.

Required: Please wear clothing that allows for full and easy movement. (if you can crawl quickly in it, it will work)

A great improviser can command a room and engage the audience with both subtle and bold choices alike. In this workshop we will focus on improvising with confidence. We will run exercises and games that will promote trusting your own ideas no matter how silly simple or weird, and performing with confidence. I am a fan of honest and encouraging feedback and building a supportive space where we can work towards finding our personal swagger and charm. Together we can chip away at the lies that fear tells us in the moment and discover we are, in fact, compelling. The moment does not require one to be clever or witty, but present and fully engaged - to show up with confidence and commit. We came to see you play. Show up! You are enough!

In Asia, status is a part of our daily life. Why not learn the fine nuances of relationships from Eastern cultures and add them to our scenes? For Western improvisers, this class will be an eye-opening re-take on status. Meanwhile, Eastern improvisers will laugh at how natural our lives transfer onto the stage with a few modern improv techniques.

Duration: 6 hours of workshop including lunch break
Location: TBD

If we can tell any story. If we can create our own scenes. If we can write our dialogues. Why not take the opportunity to talk about topics that interest us?

Impro is an inherently political tool. It is disruptive, challenging, non-conformist... or at least it could be. During this workshop we will work around five different axes: Class Consciousness, Gender Perspective, Historical Memory, Neocolonialism, and Antifascism.

Through different symbolist exercises and tools, you will discover ways to put these themes on stage without falling into pamphleteering.

Because, whether you are aware of it or not, all impro is political.

Emotional change as engine of the scene

We usually think of the scene as a sequence of events, but what happens when we have no more events to put in the scene, and the improvised scene "doesn’t work"? What if we focus on reacting to events instead? In this workshop, we will focus on our role as actors, on the importance of being and becoming vulnerable, open to emotional changes, making our scenes more meaningful, honest and engaging and to highlight what is truly important in the scene: abandoning our armor to discover the joy of stepping on stage without defenses.

Play with All the Things: An Intro to Theatrical Clowning

Date and time: Monday, 17 February 2025, 10:00 - 13:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

Find out how to use yourself and everything around you as a vehicle for pure play, and spontaneous theater.
In front of an audience we can sometimes close ourselves off. We prevent ourselves from following our joy.
Daring to be seen by the audience at every moment, will, in turn, reveal a whole world available for play.
Allowing yourself to be exposed will open you up to celebrating your own stupidity, interacting with the audience and taking more risks.
This workshop is perfect for those interested in unlocking playfulness, becoming more aware of how they are perceived by an audience, and anyone interested in clowning or developing solo work.

For participants: Please wear dark colored clothing that you can move in, without patterns or logos. No flip flops or heels please. You are welcome to go barefoot.
We will be looking at the way the body moves, so we don't want the eye drawn to or distracted by the clothing or the way you walk radically influenced by your footwear.

Making it Real: Characters to Love and Hate

Making it Real: Characters to Love and Hate

Date and time: Monday, 17 February 2025, 10:00 - 17:00
Duration: 6 hours of workshop with a lunch break
Location: TBD

This workshop will focus on playing grounded, real characters. We will explore how to create characters who don't just come alive for a few minutes, but feel like they lived a life before the scene started, and will continue their life when the scene ends.
It’s a workshop all about improvised acting and how we can challenge ourselves, and the trust of our scene partners, to not always take the path of least resistance. To not make choices that are only informed by our improviser training, but also let our choices be guided by our character and our inner director. We will work with playing realistic relationships, with conflicts and tension, how to use silence in scenes and holding on to our characters perspective as we train to make our character work grounded, multilayered and specific: making it real.

Mad World - A Deep Dive into the Hero's Journey

Mad World - A Deep Dive into the Hero's Journey

Date and time: Monday, 17 February 2025, 10:00 - 17:00
Duration: 6 hours of workshop with a lunch break
Location: TBD

Joseph Campbell figured out what all the stories, legends, myths, from all times and places, have in common. He put this into a recognizable structure of 12 steps, that every protagonist (Frodo/Dorothy/Achilles/you?) takes in his journey towards fulfillment of his true potential.

The beauty of this structure is that we learn to see and play a story on 2 different levels. We have the actual adventure, the actions and experiences of the protagonist. And under that we recognize and start to understand personal development, the intuitive part of storytelling and how stories have a metaforic use for understanding ourselves better.

In this workshop you will learn about the steps of the hero's journey in a playful and fantastical way! The structure, but also the bigger reason underneath and how it helps our protagonist grow. We get to know a couple of archetypes that help the story forward and you even might link it to your own hero's journey(s) in life!

Stereotyped! A workshop to discover (and overcome) our own gender stereotypes

Date and time: Monday, 17 February 2025, 10:00 - 13:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

Every story needs a hero—the character who goes on a journey, overcomes
their fears, and finds a love interest on the way. Often the trope follows the
man as the hero; the woman as the love interest. Women play princesses,
mistresses, mothers, or the owner of a nail salon. Men play firefighters,
soldiers, pilots and CEOs. Unfortunately, clichéd, binary roles are still leading
to clichéd play on improv stages all over this world. But this does not have to
be the case! When we break away from stereotypes, we can perform improv
that reflects the true diversity of characters in the real world without being
beholden to such roles.
In this workshop, improvisers will learn to discover and recognize stereotypes
and find ways to play without needing to rely on them.

Date and time: Monday, 17 February 2025, 14:00 - 17:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

This workshop will examine the concept of making “mistakes” while improvising. Is it even possible to make a mistake when no one knows what is supposed to happen to begin with?
if improv “mistakes” are an actual thing, is it viable to think of them as gifts, or new information waiting to be turned into a pattern? commitment to your in-the-moment discoveries and the support of your fellow improviser's choices are key concepts. Do they go out the window when you or someone else you are improvising with goofs? do you double down on your errors or do you try to “fix” them. what do you do when someone strays from an agreed-upon form, calls your character the wrong name, or brings up a taboo subject during the course of a show, or even a rehearsal? You will come away with the correct answer. Maybe.

Ghost Quarters

Date and time: Tuesday, 18 February 2025, 10:00 - 17:00
Duration: 6 hours of workshop, with a lunch break and a showcase the same night
Location: TBD

A new improv format inspired by the BBC TV series Ghosts and built on the bones of the popular Close Quarters format. Performers will play ghosts from various eras who have essentially been room mates for centuries as they continue to haunt the location where all of them met their end.

From an improv point of view, the form offers great opportunities. Historical characters, a single theatrical location to explore and the restriction that as the ghosts can’t touch or affect the living world - all the drama and comedy must come from their relationships with each other.

We’ll work on:
- Long term friendships and enmities
- How to play historical figures spontaneously
- Balancing relationship with world building
- Creating an open, even playful, space to deal with death theatrically on stage
- Contributing to one elegant improv narrative

This workshop has a showcase the same night at 18:45.

In this workshop we'll discover the differences between certain belly-feels of awkwardness, and how to make smart choices as a performer to get the right kind of belly-feel to the audiences bellies. We'll explore the need of physicality and the no-need for words. We're gonna create scenes in both public spaces and family situations to make the audience go 'Ieeee, aaah, oh my God why are they doing that?!'- in a fun kind of way.

Duration: 6 hours of workshop with lunch break
Location: TBD

Or how to do absolutely nothing and look good

Improvised scenes often stall because improvisers are obsessed with the responsibility of finding "the right idea." But what if the right idea is right in front of us at every moment? What if it is in our partner, in a noise from the audience, or in the color of stage floorboards? In this workshop, we will learn to shed the burden of having to be creative, to "do less" in order to highlight what is already present in the scene, to take advantage of every offer and make it interesting for ourselves, our group, and the audience.

Move - Discover Improv Without Words

Move - Discover Improv Without Words

Date and time: Thursday, 20 February 2025, 14:00 - 17:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

As improv performers, our body is the tool, that we always have with us.
We send it (filled with ideas, words, and stories) onto the stage, we open our mouths, and dialogues, monologues, heated debates, and deep discussions emerge.
But what happens when we keep our mouths shut, rely only on our body, and decide to forget about language for a while?
In this workshop we will focus on telling stories only with the body.
We will engage in physical dialogues and try telling monologues without using any words at all. Using tools from Pantomime and Clowning techniques, we will experiment with what our bodies are physically able to do and discover what images, emotions, spaces, characters, and stories we can create.
Let's explore and try it out together!

Pantomime in Improv

Pantomime in Improv

Date and time: Thursday, 20 February 2025, 10:00 - 17:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop with lunch break
Location: TBD

Physical workshop where we will work on physical actions and the drawing of spaces.
If we can do things instead of saying them, we will still have our voice available to talk about other things. Can we create the entire platform of a scene without talking and start using words without having to explain who we are, where we are, and what we are doing?
We will put a lot of emphasis on the fixed points and the different ways of simulating forces. Although they have the same measurement, lifting a tube with maps as an architect is not the same thing weight wise, as a worker mobilising a steel bar in a metallurgy. Raising water from a well is not the same thing as being a firefighter and having to pull with a rope a couple of tourists that got trapped at the bottom of a cave.
Our budget for scenery in improvisation theatre is infinite, and we just have to know how to manage it.

And when? And how much? And how often?
Gah!!!
In this workshop, we’ll explore the different ways to support a scene, and learn practical skills for ensemble work, recognizing patterns, pacing, timing, and editing.
Learning to support will not only make you a better performer, it might even make you just a bit sexier...

Status: A Deep Dive

Status: A Deep Dive

Date and time: Thursday, 20 February 2025, 14:00 - 17:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

A 3 hour deep dive into status - how to read it, how to use it, and practices to build it into your muscle memory so you can unleash them on your scene partner, on your audience, and on your characters. Status is the unspoken social hierarchy that exists in every interaction, and understanding and leveraging it can greatly enhance the richness and depth of improvised scenes. We’ll use Keith Johnstone’s paradigm of status as a jumping-off point to explore it in depth; participants will explore the nuances of status, develop the ability to play with power dynamics, explore how the perceptions of self and others interact, and create compelling characters and relationships by recognising how they can affect and be affected by status. This workshop is suitable for improvisers of all levels who want to deepen their understanding and mastery of status in improvisation.

Cardboard Creatures

Date and time: Friday, 21 February 2025, 10:00 - 17:00
Duration: 6 hours of workshop and a showcase on the same evening
Location: TBD

Want to create complete weirdos out of inanimate objects? Sculpt new landscapes from brown boxes and packing paper? Perhaps you just really like puppets and want to pretend you’re part of Jim Henson’s cool gang.

Puppetry allows us to do things on stage we would never do with our own bodies, take risks unavailable to the limited human physiology and physics. There's an amazing freedom in speaking through inanimate objects instead of our own voice, using simple objects in ways they were not intended.

This workshop will show you just how much fun can be had with something as simple as a toilet roll tube and some tissue paper. You will explore shared creature creation, emotions through faceless characters, and using simple objects to create beautiful & surprising scenery. It will be cute, and most certainly weird. Come play.

Date and time: Friday, 21 February 2024, 10:00 - 17:00; Saturday, 22 February 2024, 10:00 - 17:00;
Duration: 12 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

Improvisers are often afraid of “following a narrative” as they feel they will be prisoners of a structure and lose their creative freedom. Yet understanding the key movements in a story and how characters evolve in a narration is an undeniable strength for any actor. This workshop allows the participants to discover how a story is organised around “Narrative waypoints."
These waypoints take popular narrative theories and adapt them for improvised performance. Waypoints can be used to assist the creative process of designing a show or simply to help navigate a narrative long form during a performance. The goal being to liberate creativity in flexible and exciting ways whilst unlocking the full potential of your improvised stories.
This workshop is inspired by the work of Christopher Vogler, John Truby and Blake Snyder.

Duration: 3 hours

Without scripts, choreographed steps or composed music the only thing we as improvisers bring to the stage is our body and our voice. So how can we take good care of ourselves before, after and also during a show? As a trained musical theatre actress I have collected tools and tricks that work best for me for more than 20 years and I am excited to share them with you! We'll look at things like: How do we actually produce sounds and how can our physicality affect our voice and help us bring richer characters to life? So bring some comfy clothes, stay hydrated and get ready to make funny noises!

Get Inspired by Your Senses

Get Inspired by Your Senses

Date and time: Friday, 21 February 2025, 14:00 - 17:00
Duration: 3 hours
Location: TBD

We use our senses when we improvise, of course we do. We look at our partners and listen to them, as well as the music in the scene.
In this workshop we’ll use all of our five senses, and discover new ways to use them as an inspiration for characters, scenes and styles.
We'll explore physical objects and materials as inspirations - what can we learn from their looks, their sounds, their textures, and feel.
We'll use our vision to get scene inspirations from colors, shapes, and forms. For dessert, we'll get a taste of the deep and emotional senses, the ones that are connected to our desires and memories: smell and taste.
This workshop is about inspiration, but not only. We’ll work on listening, we’ll move a lot, we’ll see how we can use it for character building or for starting scenes or for developing the story. And through all of this, we'll become more attentive listeners and partners on stage.

Real Life Impro

Real Life Impro

Date and time: Saturday, 22 February 2025, 10:00 - 13:00
Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

We've all lived in this world for quite some time, and in that time, we've collected countless stories and experiences. From the people we've met to the adventures we've had, and all the little moments in between - whether exciting or ordinary - each has shaped our lives. Every conversation, every quirky moment, and every feeling we've had are like puzzle pieces that can come together to create something new and special. Everything we've lived through can be transformed into deep, interesting, authentic, and hilariously funny impro scenes.
We'll use our true selves and our own memories to launch into scenes with honesty and spontaneity. Our past experiences can help us create compelling characters, build relationships, and navigate the narrative of our scenes. Whenever we feel stuck or unsure of how to begin or what comes next, we can draw on our personal history to guide us forward.
Always remember - you are fascinating.

Peter Brook –“I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space, whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.”

Goldilocks and the Three Bears—“At the kitchen table, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl. "This porridge is too hot!" she exclaimed. She tasted the porridge from the second bowl. "This porridge is too cold," she said. She tasted the last bowl of porridge.
"Ahhh, this porridge is just right," she said happily and she ate it all up.

These two references put together sum up the spirit of this experimental workshop, where we will look beyond the conventional expectations of improv scenes to embrace all the true possibilities of the unexpected. Anything can happen, so we must be prepared to engage with and mine the meaning out of anything that does.

Come join if you’re feeling brave, ambitious and intrigued!

Duration: 3 hours of workshop
Location: TBD

Develop your Improvisation skills by learning the ancient and mysterious art of magic! Well...mysterious at least for now... Take part in this workshop lead by Katherine Rhodes (former Vice President of The Magic Circle) & Emma Wessleus (Improviser). Not only will you learn magic you'll be able to perform straight away, but also learn skills that will boost your improv, such as:

Confidence 2.0 : Ok let's be honest, our magic isn't real. In fact, a lot of the time its designed with the mind that everything needs to go right, so how do we remain cool under that pressure, let us show you how to act right even when things are going wrong.
Audience handling: Magicians almost always have audience members on stage, learn the tricks of the trade to make sure that person does what you actually want.
Mindreading: Improv is all about getting in the same headspace as your peers, so what can we learn from the practice of mindreading and mentalism?"

This workshop is taught by two teachers. Therefore, the pricing is slightly different from our other workshops.

The audience enters a room under renovation with sheet-covered floor and furniture, painting materials scattered about. Three rolls of wallpaper drape through the room, intersecting at the centre.
A duo of decorators (∅) invite the audience to share a detailed memory of a wall. What was its color, pattern, texture? How did it make them feel then, and now?
The first of three guest improvisers begins a character monologue inspired by the memory. ∅ capture the story's echoes on the paper, painting feelings and unspoken elements. They may join as characters to reveal more. The second improviser starts where the first ended, ∅ work on the second paper. The third improviser continues from the second's ending, concluding where the first began.
Afterwards, ∅ invite the audience to explore the space, absorbing the resonance of the stories now living as echoes captured on paper.
